In the west of Madeira is the small village of Serrada. Some of the property is smart, well-constructed and maintained to a high standard with brightly coloured walls and neat gardens. Other properties are in a much sorrier state, often with no signs of habitation and even missing rooves and doors. They are evidence of a previous generation leaving the island, seeking a better future elsewhere. Madeira is more prosperous now though with low unemployment and better roads. Who knows what the future for these buildings might be?
